MWRA Nut Island Headworks

MassDOT Route 62, Princeton

MWRA Nut Island Headworks

Green was responsible for generating recommendations to improve the appearance and longevity of the plant material at the Nut Island Headworks site.  Under this task order Green inspected and assessed the condition of the landscaping at the facility, and provided specific recommendations for maintenance and upgrade of the plantings in a written report and design plans.

This study evaluates the existing condition of the plant materials at this harbor island in Quincy.  It makes recommendations that preserve the original design intent while minimizing the maintenance effort. Specific recommendations for the control of invasive species will enable the MWRA to preserve the beauty of the site.  Many of the goals and strategies out lined in this study have been implemented, including a contract for invasive species removal and ornamental plantings at the site entrance. The assessment, construction documents and construction observation were provided by our firm.

MassDOT Route 62, Princeton

Green completed the design for the reconstruction of Hubbardston Road (Route 62) with a total length of 2.9 miles in Princeton, Massachusetts. The roadway traverses residential area near the Town Common and is abutted by environmentally sensitive features such as wetlands, matured trees and stone walls.

Of vital importance to the project was the ability of our firm to obtain a design waiver from the MassDOT to reduce the required width of the new roadway. This resulted in significant preservation of matured trees and reduced disruption of stone walls, drinking water wells and abutter's property.  New sloped walls with new plantings and vegetation were created, new stone walls were constructed and a unique feature, a salamander crossing underneath the roadway was built to enhance the success of the local wildlife. Visual impacts were mitigated by planting more than 400 new trees along the roadway. At the ceremony, it was noted that Hubbardston Road had gone from one of the worst roads in Massachusetts to one that is a splendid scenic roadway driving experience.

Peabody Bikeway, Peabody

Green was the prime consultant to survey and design 4.6 miles of bikeway in Peabody, Massachusetts.  The Peabody Bikeway will follow the abandoned Boston and Maine (B&M) Railroad and runs parallel to Russell Street and Lowell Street. The Bikeway begins at the Middleton Town Line and ends at Northshore Mall, connecting over 465 acres of public-owned park space such as Corbiel Park, Radding Park, Lalikos Park and Farnham Park as well as providing an alternative transportation mode between neighborhoods and shopping areas including the Shop and Save Plaza and Northshore Mall.

The new bikeway consists of a 10-foot bituminous concrete pavement and 2-foot crushed stone shoulders that will accommodate bicyclists, runners, walkers, wheelchair accessibility, rollerbladers, etc.  Green provided landscape architecture services for this project and designed planting along the entire bikeway, landscape amenities, visual buffers from abutters, etc.  The project was successfully constructed in 2009
